Amply and Southern California Edison team up for two NATE-certified heat pump trainings

Written by Amply | October 2026

Amply is excited to partner with Southern California Edison to deliver two trainings on high performance heat pump sales and designing reliable heat pump systems that keep your customers happy and reduce callbacks.

Southern California Edison (SoCal Edison) delivers electricity to 15 million people across 50,000 square miles of central, coastal, and Southern California, covering more than 180 cities and 15 counties. Its mission is to make that electricity safe, reliable, clean, and affordable. It is committed to California’s goal of net-zero by 2045, which depends on electrifying buildings and transportation.

Electrification at that scale needs people who know how to do the work, and SoCal Edison is investing in training that workforce. Its workforce development programs offer clean energy education at every level, from entry-level workers to post-graduates. It also runs two Energy Education Centers, in Irwindale and Tulare, which offer free classes, workshops, and consultations on new energy technologies.

For contractors, the future of HVAC is heat pumps. But a heat pump that’s sized wrong or sold on price alone becomes a callback, a comfort complaint, or a homeowner who regrets the switch. The two trainings Amply is leading with SoCal Edison this November cover both halves of getting heat pumps right: selling them and designing them.

Amply's trainings

High-Performance Heat Pump Sales and Marketing
Thursday, November 12, 2026, 2:00–4:00 PM PT, online via Microsoft Teams
Instructor: Ed Smith, Co-founder and Co-CEO of Amply and co-host of The Heat Pump Podcast

This session walks through the full sales process top heat pump contractors use, from the first website visit all the way to referrals. Ed covers how to stand out from the competition and how to use your website, intake calls, and comfort surveys to qualify leads before you visit the home. He also covers using load calculations and airflow measurements during the home visit to build trust, and how to deliver a proposal with a single, clear recommendation. The goal is to lower what it costs you to win a customer and to win on trust rather than price. Attendees get a free toolkit: a website self-audit checklist, an intake call script, a comfort survey template, and a pre-visit video script. This is a basic-level class, so no prior experience is needed.

Design Heat Pumps That Won’t Come Back to Haunt You
Thursday, November 19, 2026, 2:00–4:00 PM PT, online via Microsoft Teams
Instructor: Eric Fitz, Co-founder of Amply and member of the ACCA Manual J Technical Committee

Comfort complaints in February, humidity problems in July, and electric bills the homeowner didn’t expect almost always trace back to a decision made during design. Eric walks through the design mistakes behind those problems and how to catch each one before the equipment goes in. Topics include:

  • the Manual J inputs that move the load the most, and two-minute field checks to verify them
  • measuring total external static pressure to see whether existing ducts can support a new heat pump
  • finding design airflow and true capacity in manufacturer extended performance tables
  • applying Manual S advanced procedures to variable capacity equipment

Both trainings are NATE-certified for 2 hours of CEU credit. To earn it, attend the full session and give us your NATE ID. We’ll submit your attendance to NATE.
